The goal of the YACs is to elevate the voices of youth, equipping young people to lead the way in creating more effective and humane local juvenile justice systems. FLY has been facilitating a YAC in partnership with Santa Clara County Probation since 2018. In 2020, a YAC made up of currently incarcerated youth was launched at the James Ranch, the long term incarceration facility in Santa Clara County. And most recently, in 2021, a new YAC was created in partnership with Alameda County Probation.

Lead the Way – Workshop Facilitator or Career Panelist
Lead the Way is a weekend conference for high school age girls that is planned and implemented by a girl committee, who also sets the theme. This year’s theme is “intersectional feminism”. 100-200 girls usually attend Lead the Way. Last year 124 attended the conference virtually, but this year’s conference will again be in person. Each Girl Scout attendee participates in 3 grade-level track workshops and 5 elective workshops over the weekend, as well as a celebratory dinner and keynote speaker on Saturday. Some of the current confirmed workshop topics are “Mental Health Check-In”, “Racism Awareness”, “Adulting 101”, and “Applying Leadership”.
Girl Scouts has workshops they are seeking speakers for! In particular, they are hoping to recruit folks who love working with youth, and who also reflect their identities, including women, gender-expansive folks, and BIPOC. Workshop sessions will take place as 40 minute sessions on EITHER 2/12 or 2/13. If you would like to sign up and get more information on leading a workshop, please fill out the form here: https://forms.gle/tkeFg9EsTEYewpUz8. If there are folks interested in the conference but not sure about a workshop, there are also speaking opportunities on a Career Panel.
Spring Afterschool Programs – Speaker (in person and virtual)
In the Girl Scouts’ spring afterschool programs for older girls, the curriculum will be about health and wellness (relationships, mind, body), goal setting, and self-confidence. Their biggest need is for volunteers who can come in person to a 40-60 minute long program (only a 20-30 min long commitment to speak with questions and other program activities) during the school day. There will also be opportunities for virtual participation in the evenings, as well as potentially during the school day programs. If anyone is interested in learning more about volunteering with our afterschool programs, please contact Kate Cowan, Director, Philanthropic at 408-318-7020 or kcowan@girlscoutsnorcal.org.

FLY’s Movement for Justice series addresses hot topics on the juvenile justice landscape. In this first installment, on Thursday, October 14, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, FLY will be discussing The State of Youth Justice in California.
California is considered one of the most progressive states in the nation but has high rates of youth incarceration. In this installment of the Movement for Justice series, the focus will be on FLY’s engagement with Senate Bill 823. The bill permanently closes California’s state youth prisons and redirects the funding to counties to provide services for youth impacted by the justice system, including young adults who were youth when they were charged.
FLY has been on the front lines of this issue, working with our local counties as they plan for the transfer of youth in state facilities back to their home communities and make provisions to care for youth who otherwise would have been transferred to state facilities. Because youth voice is at the heart of what FLY does, they have also gathered the input of youth who are themselves currently in state facilities soon to be closed.
Join FLY for a panel discussion and Q&A between FLY CEO, Ali Knight, and three members of the FLY team who have been working to advance youth justice on this issue. Register here.
Please plan to join the Fresh Lifelines for Youth Virtual Showcase Breakfast on Friday, December 10th at 8:00 am to discover the “Power of Our Possibilities.”
Be inspired by the stories of FLY youth, and join special guest speakers as they ask you to come together to help FLY reach new milestones and support more young people from our communities. Register here.
