Exclusive Virtual Charcuterie Board Workshop

February 15, IWF NorCal member Annelise Bauer led a wonderful workshop on how to prepare appetizing and beautiful charcuterie boards. She walked through the steps of selecting, pairing, and arranging cheese, meat, fruit, nuts and other ingredients for a visually stunning and delicious board through a live demonstration. Pop Up! Screening of Nai Nai & Wai Po

February 13, through IWF NorCal member Margaret Conley, Executive Director of the Asia Society Northern California, members and guests attended a special screening of Academy Award nominated short film Nai Nai & Wai Po, and Q&A session with Director Sean Wang. An attendee said that the film was moving, bringing tears to her eyes when the two grandmothers were discussing aging and death, and the conversation with the filmmaker provided depth and understanding of what he set out to do.

Behind the Scenes at the Autodesk Gallery

February 6, IWF NorCal member Elisabeth Zornes, Chief Customer Officer of Autodesk, hosted members and guests for a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of the Autodesk Gallery. The group saw some of the amazing things that have been designed with Autodesk’s 3D modeling technology and exhibits that demonstrate how people use technology to imagine, design and create a better world. 

Walk & Talk: Lafayette Reservoir

February 3, IWF NorCal members and guests met for a walk and talk around the Lafayette Reservoir during a perfectly timed break in the rain.

IWF NorCal Speakers Bureau

January 31, The IWF NorCal Community Committee held a kick off meeting to launch the IWF NorCal Speakers Bureau. It is intended to connect members who are available to volunteer as speakers and share their expertise and experiences with local non-profit organizations seeking speakers on a range of topics. Your Future Self

January 30, IWF NorCal members attended a program to hear Dr. Hal E. Hershfield, author of the new Book, Your Future Self. Through an engaging conversation with member Lori Whitney, we received practical advice for imagining our best future to make that vision a reality. January 24, Members and guests gathered at the City Club in San Francisco for our Annual Meeting reception, the first of our annual signature events of the year. January 22, Members of the IWF NorCal San Francisco Book Club gathered at Nina Hatvany's home for its first meeting of 2024. It was a wonderful evening with great company, food, and conversation.

Marin & North Bay Book Club - Annual Sunday Lunch

January 21, Members of the IWF NorCal Marin & North Bay Book Club gathered in Sonoma for its annual Sunday lunch and book discussion. At the beautiful home of Susan Porth, the group enjoyed homemade soups and a potluck feast.


Peninsula Book Club - Annual Book Exchange

January 16, Members of the IWF NorCal Peninsula Book Club gathered at the home of Carla Boragno to kick off the book club's first meeting of 2024. The group held its annual book exchange, where each member brought a book to share. It was a fun evening of friendship, delicious food and great reads!

December 14, Over 90 IWF NorCal members gathered at McCormick & Kuleto's in San Francisco Ghirardelli Square for our Signature Event: the Annual Holiday Party! Members enjoyed connecting and celebrating the holidays over delicious food and drinks. It was a wonderful way to toast each other and another great year.

Holiday Book Review at Book Passage

December 5, IWF NorCal members and guests gathered at Book Passage at the San Francisco Ferry Building for the annual holiday book review with IWF NorCal member and Book Passage owner Elaine Petrocelli. Joined by Luisa Smith, Book Passage's head buyer, they shared many wonderful ideas on all kinds of books: from the year's best novels to engrossing non-fiction to new children's books.

Walk & Talk: Lafayette Reservoir

December 2, IWF NorCal members met up for a "walk a talk" around the Lafayette Reservoir. The misty morning was a beautiful backdrop to the wonderful time members had in connecting with nature and each other.

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair

November 18, IWF NorCal members and guests kicked off the holidays at The Great Dickens Christmas Fair on its opening day. In addition to enjoying the one-of-a-kind immersive adventure into Victorian London, attendees were treated to a special "behind-the-scenes" component with Kevin Patterson, CEO and Andrew Patterson, GM, who are the son and grandson, respectively, of IWF NorCal pioneering member and the creator of the Fair, Phyllis Patterson. 

Pop Up: Exclusive Shopping Experience at Zuri

November 15, IWF NorCal members Nancy Glaser and Amy McCombs led members and guests on a fun and exclusive shopping experience at Zuri, which sells globally inspired women's clothing that is ethically sourced and produced in Kenya. Attendees tried on beautiful clothes and walked away with dresses, shirts, and African made gifts.

San Francisco Book Club

November 13, IWF NorCal members gathered at the lovely home of Sara Holtz for a meeting of the San Francisco Book Club. The group discussed Tom Lake by Ann Patchett.

Personal Safety and Self Defense Workshop 

November 9, IWF NorCal member Ann Blackburn's friend Alex Gilmete, who is the founder and president of Golden State Cobra Defense and self-defense expert and instructor, provided members with a personal safety and self defense workshop. It was an excellent discussion with relevant and helpful information and tools for all of us to employ to stay vigilant and safe. Members may view the recording here.

The Trapeze of Life: Exploring the Importance of Image and Self Presentation 

November 7, IWF NorCal member Suzie Woodward Morris, author, prominent speaker, and Executive Coach, through an interview by IWF NorCal member and author Charlan Nemeth, shared her insights and experiences on "the trapeze of life." It was a fun, engaging, and inspiring program. Members may view the event recording here.

10 Tips to Maximize Your Executive Compensation

October 26, Ezra Singer, a former senior HR executive and expert in compensation negotiations discussed key strategies and tactics for maximizing your compensation when changing jobs. It was a very informative and engaging session with helpful tips on how to avoid leaving money on the table. We are grateful to IWF NorCal member Robin MacGillivray for organizing and facilitating this session.

Your FBI at Work

October 18, FBI Special Agent Michael Gimbel and Special Agent Martha “Marty” Parker shared information and insights on the FBI's important work. Organized by IWF NorCal member Ann Blackburn, members were engaged in a fascinating discussion, which included a human trafficking case study and a look back at the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting.

U.S. Supreme Court: Key Decisions from Last Term

October 11, IWF NorCal member Barbara Creed led her annual program on the U.S. Supreme Court providing background and insights on several of the Court’s important decisions during its last term, including voting rights, free speech and religion, affirmative action and student loans. Hearing About the IWF World Leadership Conference

October 10, IWF NorCal members Rebecca Barfknecht, Candice Eggerss, and Linda Moriarty, having just returned from the IWF World Leadership Conference held in Detroit, Michigan on October 4-6, shared conference highlights and their experiences in this timely post-conference virtual get together. Facilitated by Beth Devin, the discussion provided insights into these special IWF gatherings that are full of meaningful content, unique destination specific experiences, and opportunities to connect with IWF sisters from around the world. September 27, The IWF NorCal San Francisco Book Club met to discuss former U.S. Congresswoman Jackie Speier's book Undaunted: Surviving Jonestown, Summoning Courage, and Fighting Back. With the author in attendance, this was a truly memorable discussion and gathering. Our gratitude to IWF NorCal member Jan Yanehiro for hosting this event in her home and inviting our special guest.

Behind the Scenes at ABC7 News Studio in San Francisco

September 22, IWF NorCal members and guests visited the ABC7 news studio in San Francisco for an amazing behind the scenes tour, with special access to newscasters, producers, and the ABC7 team, who warmly welcomed our group and shared first hand experiences and insights from the broadcasting world. Our appreciation to members Cheryl Jennings, Lori Whitney, and Jan Yanehiro for making this special experience possible

Investing Sustainably and Making a Difference

September 6, IWF NorCal member Marsha Vande Berg moderated an informative and interesting discussion with two sustainability investment stars: IWF NorCal members Janine Guillot, a pivotal leader in the global effort to create corporate sustainability disclosure standards and Jennifer Grancio, whose leadership as chief executive of Engine No. 1 helped bring the mighty Exxon to its corporate knees over the energy behemoth’s slow response to climate change. Hippest Trip - The Soul Train Musical

August 31, IWF NorCal members and guests enjoyed a fabulous and fun evening at the American Conservatory Theater (ACT) to watch Hippest Trip – The Soul Train Musical. The performance was preceded by a special reception hosted by ACT Executive Director and IWF NorCal Member Jennifer Bielstein.

IWF Western Region Leaders' Retreat

August 11-13, members from IWF British Columbia, IWF Northern California, IWF Oregon, IWF Southern California, IWF Utah, and IWF Washington gathered in the beautiful city of Vancouver, BC, for the first IWF Western Region Leaders' Retreat. It was a fabulous weekend connecting, learning and exploring with fellow IWF women.

2023 Summer Camp

July 14 - 16, IWF NorCal members gathered once again at the beautiful grounds of Bishop's Ranch in Healdsburg, CA for our annual summer camp weekend. It was a relaxing time getting to know each other and deepening connections over a variety of fun activities.

A Conversation with Carla Harris

July 6, IWF NorCal members and guests heard from Carla Harris, Vice Chairman of Wealth Management and Senior Client Advisor at Morgan Stanley. It was an inspiring conversation, facilitated by IWF NorCal member Beth Devin, where Carla shared learning, wisdom, and stories from her latest book “Lead to Win: How to be a Powerful, Impactful, Influential Leader in Any Environment” as well as her perspectives on an a range of current issues and topics that touch women and leadership. June 26, IWF NorCal President Valerie Corradini hosted an informal get together at her lovely home for members to mix, mingle and meet a few prospective new members. It was a delightful evening with wonderful conversation and delicious treats.

How to Live and Lead on Purpose

June 21, Amy Eliza Wong, founder of Always On Purpose® and the author of Living On Purpose: Five Deliberate Choices to Realize Fulfillment and Joy, facilitated a special event for IWF members. Through an informative, interactive and engaging presentation, Amy shared specific steps to "create flow and live and lead on purpose." 2023 New Connections Luncheon

June 10, Our annual New Connections Luncheon was once again held at The Olympic Club in San Francisco and we celebrated friendships and our incredible community. We welcomed seven new members and also heard from nine of our "sustaining" members who have been a member for 25 years or more, and included three founding members: Barbara Creed, Michele Hughes and Rachel Mueller.

June 7, Three IWF NorCal members: Barbara Creed, Sonita Lontoh and Debra Plousha-Moore participated in a lively and interesting panel presentation to share their "re-wirement" stories of finding purpose, meaning, and satisfaction during career and life transitions. The engaging discussion was moderated by IWF NorCal member Denise Brosseau. Diversifying Boards and Landing Your Seat at the Table

May 30, IWF NorCal welcomed Jana Rich, Founder and CEO of Rich Talent Group, and Andrea Perez, SVP Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, for an hour-long virtual event about diversifying boards and board readiness. Jana and Andrea shared invaluable insights about their experiences building and serving on boards—everything from what it takes to be a board member to demystifying the recruiting process.

Getting Started with ChatGPT and Other AI Tools 

May 25, Based on member request, IWF NorCal members Denise Brosseau and Beth Devin held an online discussion to introduce and de-mystify some of the AI tools in the headlines today, providing practical use cases and tips for getting started. It was an informative session covering the basics of these tools, including their applications, benefits, and challenges, and examples of how they can be used in real-world scenarios. Members may watch the recording here

Longevity Presents Many Business Opportunities..."Furtherhood"

May 23, IWF NorCal member Marsha Vande Berg introduced her fellow colleague from the 2016 Stanford Distinguished Careers program, Susan Golden, who led an inspiring discussion on innovation and entrepreneurial opportunities created by longevity. Author of STAGE (Not Age), Susan dispelled common misconceptions about older adults, addressed ageism head-on, and encouraged everyone to embrace the concept of “furtherhood.” Members may watch the recording here.

May 22, Members gathered at the elegant home of IWF NorCal member Nanette Miller to hear from IWF NorCal & IWF Colorado member Anne Chermak Dillen for an informal discussion on the current situation in Ukraine. Joining the group was special guest Nataliya Anon, founder of Bay Area NGO Hromada, which provides humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Marin & North Bay Book Club

May 15, The Marin & North Bay Book Club gathered at the office of IWF NorCal member Mary Bersot in Tiburon to discuss the book "Who Killed Jane Stanford? A Gilded Age Tale of Murder, Deceit, Spirits and the Birth of a University," by Richard White. It was a wonderful evening capped with a group selfie!

May 10, Members gathered to hear from IWF NorCal member Musimbi Kanyoro, who was once again in the Bay Area, visiting from Nairobi where she now resides. The group had a great discussion on women, human rights and hope for the future. We are grateful to IWF NorCal president Valerie Corradini for hosting this pop up in her beautiful home.

May 10, IWF NorCal member Beth Devin led a panel discussion with three 2022-2023 IWF Fellows: Grace Francisco, Siobhan Oat-Judge, and Karenga Ross. The panelists shared their inspiring stories, their legacy projects, and the profound impact the Fellows programs has had on them both personally and professionally. San Francisco Book Club

May 8, Members of the IWF NorCal San Francisco Book Club gathered in the lovely home of Lisbeth McNabb for a fun evening of food and a discussion of The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. The group was treated to a special guest from the SF Opera, for a burst of energy and a production on Frida. 

2023 Dine Arounds

May 4, Over 50 members gathered at the beautiful homes of members all around the Bay Area and near Lake Tahoe. Appreciation to our gracious hosts Barbara Adachi, Linda Graebner, Ellen Jacobs, Latanya Mapp Frett, Rachel Mueller, Andrea Steiner, and Jan Yanehiro for a warm and wonderful evening with delicious food. Friendships were formed and deepened at these very special dinners.

The Green Wave: Exploring Trends and Innovation in the Booming Cannabis Industry

May 3, IWF members Valerie Corradini (NorCal), Kerry Jordan (Chicago), and Kim Sanchez-Rael (New Mexico) shared their insights, expertise and work in the cannabis industry via a panel discussion led by IWF NorCal member Rachel Perkel. From product and regulatory developments, investment opportunities, and trends at the state and national level, the group explored the current challenges and opportunities shaping the cannabis landscape. Members may watch the recording here

The Wonderful Women of Disney: Private Tour

April 29, IWF NorCal members participated in a private tour of The Wonderful Women of Disney at The Walt Disney Family Museum in The Presidio. It was a great tour, followed by a nice lunch at nearby Colibri Mexican Bistro. We are grateful to IWF NorCal member Lori Whitney for organizing this event! 

Flourishing in Perimenopause and Menopause 

April 26, IWF NorCal member Nicole Soluri was joined by leaders of Midi Health: Joanna Strober, Founder and CEO and Dr. Kathleen Jordan, Chief Medical Officer, for an informative discussion on flourishing in perimenopause and menopause. Midi is on a mission to bring compassionate high-quality medical care to women 40+. Members may watch the recording here.

April 23, IWF NorCal members, led by Laura Heisman, had a lovely time walking and talking on the Los Gatos Creek Trail. The group went on for a nice breakfast afterwards.

COOL: Women Leaders Reversing Global Warming

April 13, IWF NorCal member, author, and photographer Paola Gianturco, led an engaging and informative discussion by sharing the stories and photographs of what several women leaders are doing to address climate change in their communities. Paola also shared background on her book "COOL: Women Leaders Reversing Global Warming" and her experience co-authoring it with her then 11-year old granddaughter. Stories of Triumph and Lessons Learned by Women Startup Founders

April 4, IWF NorCal member Beth Devin led an engaging panel with three amazing startup founders: Kishau Rogers, CEO & Founder of Time Study, Amra Tareen, CEO & Co-founder of ALL3D, and Kristen Wiley, CEO & Founder of Statusphere. Panelists shared their personal stories, insights, and experiences from starting their own companies for an informative and inspirational discussion. Members may watch the recording here.

IWF Western Region Cocktail Cafe

The IWF Western Region forums, including British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Northern California, and Southern California, held a virtual cocktail café on March 30th. With 100 members registered to participate in 15 separate cafés, it was a wonderful cross-forum event! 

The Everyday Feminist with Latanya Mapp Frett

March 28, IWF NorCal member Latanya Mapp Frett, President and CEO of Global Fund for Women, shared stories and a reading from her recently published book "The Everyday Feminist: The Key to Sustainable Social ImpactDriving Movements We Need Now." Members had an interesting and inspiring discussion with Latanya on current challenges and what we can all do to support the everyday feminist as allies.  Members may watch the recording here

AI/ML Update: How ChatGPT is Disrupting Our Work and Lives 

March 27, IWF NorCal members participated in an engaging and thought-provoking discussion about one of hottest new technology innovations - ChatGPT. The panel was led by IWF NorCal member Beth Devin and included Angela Hoover, CEO and co-founder of Andi, Jessica Hubley, Managing Partner of Story LLP, and Liz Tsai, CEO and founder of HiOperator. 90 Years of Diplomatic Relations

March 16, On the eve of St. Patrick's Day, Jennifer Chadwick, Vice Consul General of Ireland in San Francisco, joined IWF NorCal members to share Irish history, stories and a traditional Irish St. Patrick Day’s toast in the native language of Ireland, Gaeilge. February 19, IWF NorCal members had a fun evening in Marin where they attended a performance of Justice at the Marin Theatre Company, followed by dinner at Tamalpie.

February 18, IWF NorCal members went on a docent-led private tour of the Magnificent Magnolias at the San Francisco Botanical Garden. Organized by IWF NorCal member Margaret Conley, members were able to enjoy peak blooms and a glorious day.

Discovering What Matters Most

February 14, IWF NorCal member Dawn Gross , MD, PhD, hospice and palliative medicine specialist, led members in an exploration about Discovering What Matters Most while navigating complex life transitions. Each participant received their own Dyalogues Toolkit and practiced using it in a safe and warm environment created by Dawn. She reminds us how Communicating Love is at the heart of every conversation.

Dinner and Theater in Berkeley

February 11, IWF NorCal members had a wonderful evening in Berkeley over dinner and the theater. They enjoyed a fun performance of Clyde's at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

Global Demographics Behind the Headlines

February 7, IWF NorCal member and author Adele Hayutin, who is an Annenberg Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institution, took us on a world tour of population change and its dramatic consequences. With helpful data, charts and analysis, she examined past global population dynamics and illuminated how these forces will combine over the next few decades in ways that threaten economic security and political stability. 2023 Annual Meeting

The 2023 Annual Meeting was held in two parts: a virtual business meeting on Tuesday, January 24th and a cocktail reception on Wednesday, January 25th. Members may view the recording and other related materials here.  

Walk & Talk: Lafayette 

January 21, IWF NorCal members and guest enjoyed a lovely walk around the Lafayette Reservoir on this beautiful Saturday morning and many also went on to have breakfast together. It was so nice to get out and enjoy some sun and great company after all of the rain the past few weeks!

Reflections on the Repeal of Roe

January 11, IWF NorCal member Barbara Creed was joined by fellow member Stacy Cross, President & CEO at Planned Parenthood Mar Monte in part 3 of Barbara's Supreme Court series. Together, they discussed the June 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision to reverse Roe v. Wade, focusing on the human impacts and legal implications, providing context with relevant state specific legislation, and exploring the potential implications of the Court’s decision on other rights that are not constitutionally protected. It was an educational and important discussion. San Francisco Book Club

January 9, IWF NorCal's San Francisco Book Club held our first event of 2023 with a discussion of The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett at the lovely home of IWF NorCal member Lori Whitney. It was a wonderful way to start the year!

Signature Event: 2023 Annual Meeting

We will be kicking off the new year with a two-part Annual Meeting. Join us via Zoom on Tuesday, January 24th to celebrate our 2022 accomplishments and the exciting upcoming new year, and then come toast with us at an in-person cocktail reception on Wednesday, January 25th at The City Club.

Holiday Open House & Toast

December 20, For our final event of 2022, members gathered for a virtual toast and heard from Community Forward SF's CEO Kara Zordel and Felecia Torrez, Director of Development, regarding the critical work they do for women who are homeless in San Francisco. It was a privilege to partner with Community Forward SF for IWF NorCal's 2022 Holiday Gift Drive.

December 15, IWF NorCal members from both near and far gathered to catch up and connect. Our Out-of-Area and Dual members are an important constituent of IWF NorCal and we value opportunities to touch base and hear from them. Happy holidays! 

Private Holiday Fire Pit Experience at Filoli

December 14, IWF NorCal members had a magical evening at Filoli Historic Estate & Garden in Woodside, CA. The illuminated grounds were breathtaking and enjoying festive drinks and appetizers fireside with IWF sisters was an experience to remember. Thank you to CEO Kara Newport for welcoming us to Filoli. 

2022 Holiday Party

December 8, over 70 members gathered at McCormick & Schmick's in San Francisco's Ghirardelli Square for our 2022 holiday party! It was a wonderful signature event, with a delicious lunch and ample time for members to connect and celebrate friendships, our community, and the holidays.

U.S. Supreme Court: Cases to Watch This Term 

November 29, IWF NorCal member Barbara Creed presented part 2 of her Supreme Court series focusing on three cases on the Court's docket this term. Members learned the issues, had a robust discussion, and cast their vote on how they would vote if presented with these cases. Part 3 will be held on January 11 and will focus on "Reflections on The Repeal of Roe: Human Impacts and Legal Issues" (register here). Members may view the recordings from parts 1 and 2 here.

San Francisco Book Club

November 14, members of the IWF NorCal San Francisco Book Club gathered at the beautiful home of Jan Yanehiro for a wonderful evening of friendships, food and conversation, with NY Times bestselling author Jasmin Darznik to discuss her book The Bohemians.

2022 Holiday Gift Drive

November 10, As the holiday season nears, we are excited to kick off a charitable fundraising drive in partnership with Community Forward SF, a fantastic 40+ year organization serving the City’s homeless population. We aim to raise over $5,000 through cash contributions and in-kind gifts through their Amazon wish list. Learn more.

November 10, The November IWF NorCal board meeting was held over dinner, where the group welcomed three new 2023 board members: Margaret Conley, Diane Knoll and Carolyn Vavrek.  

ReWirement: An IWF Conversation about Thriving as We Consider Life Transitions

November 9, IWF NorCal members Wendy Beecham, Denise Brosseau, Sara Holtz and Heather Pelant led members in a discussion about "ReWirement" via four breakout groups that focused on Place/Finding Community, Do/Sharing & Monetizing Expertise, Do/Engagement & Purpose (but not for pay) and Money (how to afford what is next). This meaningful discussion was the first as we explore ways to continue to support one another on our respective life journeys.    

Spotlight on Social Impact Tech & Hiring

November 8, IWF NorCal member Rebecca Barfknecht led a conversation with Abeer Abu Ghaith, IWF Fellow and Founder and CEO of MENA Alliances, which is a social tech company that connects global organizations with highly-skilled and vetted talent from the Middle East and North Africa. This was an informational and inspirational virtual event, hearing her amazing story and impact on women in the region. Members may watch the recording here.

Pop Up! Halloween Treats!

October 30, IWF NorCal member Suzie Woodward Morris led members and friends on a daring adventure of imagination and delight to explore San Francisco's Haight Street and all the boo-tiques filled with tricks and treats. It was a fun afternoon for some spooky inspiration and a hoooowwwwling good time, all in the Halloween sprit!

Behind the Scenes at the San Francisco Chronicle

October 27, IWF NorCal members were treated to a "behind the scenes" discussion with Emilio Garcia-Ruiz, Editor in Chief of the San Francisco Chronicle, and heard first hand how the San Francisco Chronicle works to provide accurate information in the age of disinformation and what it takes to stay on top of local issues and trends. We are grateful to IWF NorCal member Eleanor Chang who organized this event. 

U.S. Supreme Court: Key Decisions from Last Term

October 25, The United States Supreme Court addressed many important topics during its 2021-2022 term, which have significant implications as we look ahead. IWF NorCal member Barbara presented part 1 of her virtual series and summarized several of the Court’s important decisions from its last term, including gun control, limitations on the authority of administrative agencies, and religious rights. She then facilitated an engaging discussion on these topics. Part 2 will be held on November 29 and focus on three cases on the Court's upcoming docket (register here). It's Out Vote, Yet Is It Our Right? Learn How We Can Mobilize for Democracy.

September 29, Members gathered for a timely ”behind the headlines” examination of challenges to voting in the upcoming elections. With special guest Bridgett A. King, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and Director of the Master of Public Administration Program at Auburn University, and IWF NorCal member and President of RENEW, Linda Hawes Clever, we learned about election law and administration, democracy, and voting rights. Participants received a deeper understanding of the issues at play and concrete action steps to support democracy. Members may view the recording here.

Power Up Your Image 

September 27, IWF NorCal member and IMAGE/FrockStar/Exec Coach Suzie Woodward Morris led members on an IMAGE/FASHION extravaganza focused on what to wear 'après-pandemic.' Members had a fun time shopping in San Francisco and being transformed!

San Francisco Book Club

September 12, The inaugural meeting of the San Francisco Book Club was held at the home of IWF NorCal member Carol Fleming. Members discussed the book Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff and enjoyed a potluck dinner. The book club will meet every other month at a member's home; the next gathering will be on November 14.

Walk & Talk: Presidio Tunnel Tops

September 10, IWF NorCal members explored the Presidio Tunnel Tops together for a nice Saturday morning walk & talk. Some members also went to lunch together afterwards.  

Pop Up! Summer Mingle

August 22, IWF NorCal members gathered for a potluck dinner at the home of Rachel Perkel. It was a lovely evening making connections and celebrating friendships over a nice meal.

2022 New Connections Luncheon


July 23, we met at The Olympic Club, in-person as a group, for the first time in way too long. Members old and new enjoyed seeing each other and re-connecting, updating on our lives, changed hairstyles, and how we’ve adapted to this new normal. Some beautiful things persist, as we welcomed our new members and celebrated the spirit of our Forum camaraderie to “come as you are” for inspiration, friendship and community.


2022 Summer Camp

July 15 - 17, Summer Camp 2022 was spectacular! It was so good to get back together in person again, and as always, the friendships formed and renewed over the weekend were amazing. Everyone had a great time and Summer Camp shows that whether you are a 2 month member or a 40 year member we all have that special quality that makes us a community. 

Pop Up! An Escape Room Adventure

June 12, IWF NorCal members and guests went on an Escape Room adventure at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. The group successfully solved the puzzle challenges in the Great Houdini Escape Room, and proved themselves worthy of the title Master Escape Artist! What a fun way to get to know one another! 

2022 Dine Arounds

June 9, IWF NorCal members gathered at member homes in the East Bay, Peninsula and San Francisco for dine arounds, a cherished IWF tradition. Thank you to our hosts Barbara Adachi, Cynthia Kasabian, Debra Plousha-Moore, Karen Silverman, and Vanessa Washington for welcoming members into their beautiful homes. It was truly an evening of Fun, Friendship, and Food!

June 4, IWF NorCal members gathered for a "walk and talk" around the Lafayette Reservoir. Led by Board member Beth Devin, it was a lovely morning.

Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month

May 14, IWF NorCal members gathered at Fang Restaurant in San Francisco in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month and to hear from IWF NorCal member Anna Mok, President and Chair of Ascend Leadership and Partner at Deloitte & Touche LLP, in a fireside chat with IWF NorCal member Margaret Conley. The group also met Chef Kathy Fang and enjoyed her delicious cuisine. The conversation was engaging, informative and thought provoking.  

Behind the Scenes at Airfield Supply Co.

May 6, IWF NorCal members received a private tour of Airfield Supply Company, one of California’s largest medical and adult use cannabis facilities. The group was guided through Airfield Supply’s plant growing, extraction, production and retail space. It was a great opportunity to learn more about California’s largest cash crop and the country’s fastest growing employment sector.

Virtual Meet Up on Cinco de Mayo

May 5, IWF NorCal members gathered for a virtual meet up on Cinco de Mayo. In addition to catching up with each other, the group learned about Cinco de Mayo history and traditions. Hosted by IWF NorCal board member Pam Baker, it was a warm and festive time. Salud!

"Overqualified" - Attorneys Discuss Our New Supreme Court Justice 

April 27, IWF NorCal and CoRE Task Force member Nicole Kelsey was joined by special guests Monise Brown, Heather Choi, and Michelle Thomas to discuss their perspectives on the historic appointment of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. Together, these attorneys provided context to the history of Black women in the law and in their own experiences in the profession. They also highlighted expectations about the value Judge Brown Jackson will add to the Court, with regard to both its own internal dynamics and certain substantive areas of law currently under scrutiny across our nation. April 26, IWF NorCal member Bobbie LaPorte, Founder and CEO of an advisory firm that specializes in getting results in high volatility scenarios, shared insights and stories from her recently published book “When the Curveballs Keep Coming: A Leadership Playbook for an Uncertain World,” through a fireside chat with IWF NorCal member Julie Castro Abrams, Founder and CEO of How Women Lead. Getting Into Nature Through 'Forest Bathing' 

April 24, IWF NorCal members and guests came together on a beautiful Sunday morning to enjoy an immersion experience in the style of Shinrin-Yoku, or 'forest bathing'. They were guided by executive coach, facilitator and speaker, Joy Khoo at the Tilden Nature Area in Berkeley. We are reminded that nature has a positive effect on our mind as well as body.

April 12, Published flower enthusiast Cynthia Bigony joined members over Zoom to share her secrets and tips while demonstrating her floral arranging creativity. Some members followed along, working on their own beautiful centerpieces. It was a fun and enjoyable experience for all. April 5, Members received an overview of the world of blockchain and cryptoassets from Matthew Le Merle, Managing Partner at Blockchain Coinvestors. Then IWF NorCal member Nichole Walker, SVP & Sr. Wealth Strategist at City National Bank, was joined by Lauren McClelland, VP for Finance at Marin Community Foundation and Yu-Ting Wang, Tax Partner at Armanino LLP, and discussed wealth planning and tax considerations for crypto. Women Taking Action

March 30, In honor of Women's History Month, we celebrated Women Taking Action with research, business experiences, and personal stories shared by IWF NorCal members Wendy Beecham, Cathy Benko and Marica Linn, who were joined by special guest Colleen Cutcliffe. The conversation centered around the core themes of #BreakTheBias and #IWFPaysItForward. Virtual Meet Up - St. Patrick's Day Toast

March 17, Members came together for a fun virtual "meet up" on St. Patrick's Day. With shamrock backgrounds, our favorite green attire, St. Patrick's Day trivia, and celebratory beverages, it was a great way to celebrate our community and the holiday.

Putin's War Against Ukraine  

March 16, IWF NorCal member Anne Chermak Dillen, who recently returned from Ukraine, made a special presentation to provide a historical perspective, in-country impressions, and commentary on current developments. Anne, who had a 34-year career as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. State Department, spent four months in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, as a Fulbright Scholar, lecturing and consulting on public diplomacy at Ukraine's Diplomatic Academy, and working on projects in support of women' leadership. She was evacuated to Warsaw in late January and returned to the U.S. in March.

March 5, What a joy for members to get together for a private tour of the magnificent magnolias at the San Francisco Botanical Gardens! Our appreciation to IWF NorCal member Margaret Conley for organizing the event and a special thanks to Plant Records Manager, Tory Stewart, for sharing her knowledge and expertise.

The Future of Work and Van Ton-Quinlivan's "WorkforceRX"  

February 2, IWF NorCal members Van Ton-Quinlivan, Cindy Eisenberg and Roslyn Payne facilitated an interesting and important discussion on the future of work, with stories and insights from Van's new book "WorkforceRX: Agile and Inclusive Strategies for Employers, Educators and Workers." 2022 Annual Meeting

January 25, Our 2022 Annual Meeting was a celebration of another incredible year. We met eight of our wonderful new members, enjoyed small breakout sessions, and heard from our President, Treasurer and Programs Chair. January 11, For our first event of the year, IWF NorCal Member Rebecca Macieira-Kaufmann, former CEO and author of "FitCEO: Be the Leader of Your Life," was joined by her friend and former Deloitte executive Sandra Shirai for an intimate fireside chat. Together, they shared personal stories and strategies for your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Regional and Virtual Holiday Parties

December 14, Members gathered at four Bay Area locations for regional in person holiday parties as well as a virtual celebration with stars from Virtual Broadway. It was a festive evening of delicious food and drinks, laughter and friendships, and singing and holiday cheer. Happy holidays!

December 8, Members gathered for a lovely holiday luncheon at the Round Hill Country Club, as part of our annual regional holiday parties. Organized by Ann Blackburn and Mary Jo Potter, attendees also participated in a holiday book exchange and had a festive time.

December 6, Members were thrilled to be able to get together once again at Book Passage for our annual Holiday Book Review with Book Passage owner and IWF NorCal member Elaine Petrocelli. We heard Elaine's top picks for children, fiction and non-fiction, as well as great holiday gift ideas.

US Supreme Court Cases to Watch This Term

Thanksgiving Holiday Mini-Toast

November 25, IWF NorCal members gathered for a virtual mini-Thanksgiving Day toast, to celebrate friendships, our community, and everything we are all grateful for on this special holiday. IWF NorCal member Yvette Hollingsworth Clark shared a beautiful reading of Maya Angelou's poem "Continue" that was written for Oprah Winfrey in 2016, which still resonates today.

Virtual Book Launch: Maryles Casto's "A Hole in the Clouds"

November 22, IWF NorCal members were treated to a fun and inspiring discussion between IWF NorCal members and best friends Maryles Casto and Mary Huss. Through an interview conducted by Mary Huss, President and Publisher of San Francisco Business Times, we learned of Maryles Casto's new book "A Hole in the Clouds" and her incredible journey, from immigrating from the Philippines to building a successful business from the ground up in Silicon Valley, and lessons about how she shaped her business and what it took to thrive in an industry threatened by extinction. Virtual Book Launch: Ellen Snee's "Lead"   

October 7, IWF NorCal member Ellen Snee provided members with an exclusive "virtual" book launch discussion of her recently published book Lead: How Women In Charge Claim Their Authority. Through an interview with Jan Yanehiro, Emmy Award winning broadcaster and fellow IWF NorCal member, we learned about Ellen's earlier life as a Catholic nun, her groundbreaking research on women’s leadership development, and her coaching and consulting work with executive women. September 29, members were treated to a screening of the award winning documentary $avvy and then engaged in an intimate discussion with the film's producer and director and IWF NorCal member Robin Hauser, who was joined by IWF NorCal members Linda Calhoun, founder and executive producer of CareerGirls.org, Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz, Board Chair and President of the Charles Schwab Foundation, and Valerie Corradini, Chief Investment Officer of La Hoja Capital Management. IWF NorCal Virtual Community "Meet Up"

September 14, after taking the summer off, members joined us once again for a casual virtual "meet up" where we break out into smaller groups to catch up and connect with one another. We look forward to seeing you again in October!

A Live Cooking Experience and Cocktail Pairing with Truffle Shuffle 

September 2, members were treated to a fun and interactive truffle cooking experience from their respective kitchens. Together, led by chef Alejandro of Truffle Shuffle San Francisco, members cooked Risotto alla Milanese. This event was made possible by First Republic and was hosted by Hafize Gaye Erkan, Co-CEO, President and Board Member, and IWF NorCal member.

Signature Event: New Connections  

July 23, our annual Signature Event: New Connections was a virtual beach party where we celebrated our friendships, welcomed new members, and had some summer fun! Congratulations to Glenda Humiston for her "Best Beach Virtual Background," Joanne Howard for being "Best Dressed for a Beach Party," and Cindy Eisenberg for her "Best Looking Summery Drink!"  

Walk and Talk in Tiburon 

June 26, IWF NorCal members Heather Pelant and Amy Logan led a "walk and talk" in Tiburon for a wonderful Saturday outdoor get together. Members walked from Blackie's Pasture to downtown Tiburon and enjoyed brunch at Sam's Anchor Cafe.


Webinar: SPACtion Update: The Insider's Perspectives and Outlook    

June 16, IWF NorCal members Christina Bui, Chief Revenue Officer at Kranz, and Lara Druyan, Managing Director at Silicon Valley Data Capital, with special guest Jim Cook, CFO at Orbital Insights, explained special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) and shared their insights on the trends around these "blank check companies." Through a lively discussion, members heard the panelists' latest outlook for SPACs, recent war stories and examples, and lessons learned. Members may view the recording here

Mini Summer Camp

June 5, It was a ray of IWFNorCal Summer Camp sunshine as 35 members gathered across five locations for outdoor picnics! Members reconnected at this first in person event since March 2020 and the afternoon was filled with hugs, laughter, food, drinks and the joys of sisterhood. 

Women and Wealth 

May 25, IWF NorCal members Valerie Corradini, Robin Hauser, Heather Pelant and Barbara Pierce shared their expertise and perspectives to explore the behavioral attitudes, cultural drivers and gender dynamics of how women relate to money and finance. Participants watched an exclusive preview of the documentary $avvy and learned of tools to empower women, at any stage in their lives, to take action toward aligning their financial, social and investing intentions. 

Celebrating Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month

To commemorate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, IWF NorCal is celebrating our AAPI leaders. In particular, 2021 is a time for unity and recognizing the contributions of Asian leaders. Bi-Coastal Cocktail Cafe

May 6, IWF members from IWF British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Southern California, Northern California and the Caribbean/Bermuda attended our first "Bi-Coastal Cocktail Cafe." With up to 8 IWF members in each of the 22 Cafes, it was a wonderful opportunity to meet and get to know some of our IWF sisters in other West Coast and Caribbean/Bermuda forums. 

Spring Dine Arounds

April 28, we held five virtual spring dine arounds for IWF NorCal members, each hosted by a member with fun and creative themes, including the Academy Awards, Mediterranean Delights, New Beginnings, and Derby Day. Thank you to our hosts and all who participated for some "Fun, Friendship and Food!"

IWF West Coast Workshop: Build Your Influence as a Thought Leader
April 27, IWF NorCal member Denise Brosseau, thought leadership consultant and author, led an informative and inspiring workshop for members of the five west coast forums (British Columbia, Northern California, Oregon, Southern California, and Washington). Through workshop participants, we saw and heard how IWF thought leaders are sharing their opinions, amplifying ideas/people/events, convening the community, serving as a spokesperson, sharing the microphone, and codifying lessons learned. Special New Member Virtual Community Meet Up

April 22, IWF NorCal members gathered for a special edition of our monthly virtual community meet up to welcome five of our 2021 new members: Adriane Armstrong, Valentina Glaviano, Nicole Kelsey, Jill Nash, and Amy Saxton. After hearing from each of the five new members, we held smaller breakout sessions so that each of our new members could meet a few other members.

April 14, IWF NorCal members Marion McGovern, Board Chair of Myers-Briggs, and Van Ton-Quinlivan, CEO of Futuro Health, were joined by special guest Susana Covarrubias, Design Principal from Gensler, Seattle, for a panel discussion on “The Future of Work.” They covered current issues in the workplace, workforce and education, and how the pandemic has impacted all facets of working. The Rising Tide of Anti-Asian Sentiment

April 12, the Champions of Racial Equality (CoRE) Task Force held a discussion with members on "Dignity of Each Person: The Rising Tide of Anti-Asian Sentiment." We are grateful that IWF provides a safe haven for members to have deep and intimate conversations on important topics around racial equality. Our next session will be held on June 8. The Biden Administration: An Insider's View from Congresswoman Jackie Speier

March 23, IWF NorCal member and award winning broadcast journalist Jan Yanhiro led an intimate conversation with Congresswoman Jackie Speier, who provided an insider's view of the important work she is doing as well as her thoughts on the current administration and pressing issues facing our nation. For Women's History Month 20201, we are celebrating IWF NorCal's founders and early leaders! Based on interviews conducted by IWF NorCal member Jenny Erwin from 2014 to 2018, we will be highlighting one of our 30 early leaders each day! Judith Johnson, member since 1978

March 31, Judith Johnson was an officer of an international oil and gas exploration and contract drilling company in the 1970s, an industry dominated by men. She was the first Western business woman that men in the United Arab Emirates had ever encountered in a professional setting. Judy made it a personal goal to recruit new talent, groom young stars and provide leadership opportunities for women in her field. Judy served as IWF NorCal president in 1980.

Dianne Snedaker, member since 1989

March 30, Dianne Snedaker enjoyed a successful career in marketing and advertising, working on prominent campaigns described as breakthrough and memorable. She was President of Ketchum Advertising, and EVP and Chief Marketing Officer at First Republic Bank. Dianne takes real pride in the colleagues she has inspired and helped develop over the years, always reveling in the success of teammates. Dianne believes that focusing on loving what you do is the magical path to achievement.

Michele Hughes, member since 1978

March 29, 
Michele Hughes was the first and youngest female Partner and Director at Ward Howell International, an executive search firm, where she worked to bring more women into leadership positions at firms like Levi Strauss. Michele is an entrepreneur who has had success in several careers and has been a pioneer in fields with few women. She was a catalyst in forming IWF NorCal, served as President in 1986 and 1987, and founded IWF Hawaii. 

Toni Rembe, member 1978 - 2020

March 28, 
Toni Rembe was the first woman attorney, first woman partner, and first woman on the Executive Committee at Pillsbury. She is most proud of helping change the firm’s culture by getting more women into the firm and helping them succeed. Toni has been a mentor and role model to many and a valuable part of Pillsbury’s history, legacy and success. Toni encourages women to SPEAK UP and make sure their voices and ideas are heard.

Linda Cyrog, member 1979 - 2019

March 27, 
Linda Cyrog was a pioneer in her profession, serving as the first woman Vice President in two major influential and respected companies: McKesson and American President Lines. Not only did Linda understand the importance of being the first woman to achieve executive rank, she also played a major role to help other women rise to similar positions. Linda continues to shape leaders across the country through her business Coaching for Career Success.

Susan Porth, member since 1988

March 26, Susan Porth spent 20 years at Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and Health Plans and was CFO for 10 of them. She is proud of contributing to both the company’s financial stability and employee job satisfaction. Susan attributes her success to ambition, tenacity, brains, creativity, working for and with some great people--and luck. She advises today’s women leaders to take risks and network in order to climb the ladder to success.

Barbara Creed, member since 1978

March 25, Barbara Creed, an expert attorney on employee benefit and executive compensation law was often named on the lists of the Best Lawyers in America and California Super Lawyers prior to retirement. Barbara opened doors for women in the legal profession and helped launch the careers of many successful female lawyersShe is a role model and a sought-after speaker and continues to make an impact through her programs discussing significant cases before the US Supreme Court.

Amy McCombs, member since 1988

March 24, 
Amy McCombs has had a remarkable and influential career in journalism. In the 80s, Amy headed news organizations that were at the forefront of moving into the digital age. She influenced the industry by adopting new technologies for content, delivery systems and multiple media platforms while exploring business models that would guarantee sustainability. Amy received the prestigious Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism in the early 90s and continues to be a thought leader and mentor. 

Diane Winokur, member since 1978

March 23, Diane Winokur had a varied career path where she was often a pioneer as the first or one of the few women in her field. She has worked tirelessly to support women’s opportunities to advance, including establishing the IWF NorCal Legacy Foundation and serving as its first president. In the past several years, Diane has become a fierce advocate in the field of ALS and 
helped found the ALS Treatment and Research Center at UC San Francisco. 

Joanne Howard, member since 1978

March 22, Joanne Howard has enjoyed a long and prestigious career in portfolio and investment management, recently joining Bailard. She was an early leader in finance, being the only female in her MBA class and the only female investment manager with Scudder, Stevens & Clark in the late 70s. Also an early leader for IWF, Joanne helped to form both the NorCal and Oregon chapters, and today, leads IWF NorCal’s theater program. 

Drucilla Ramey, member 1990 - 2018

March 21, Drucilla Ramey is a civil rights attorney with a passion for gender equity issues and has been a fierce advocate for women and minority rights throughout her life. She was the Executive Director and General Counsel of the Bar Association of San Francisco for 17 years and is most proud of transforming it into a nationally recognized public service organization focused on improving the lives of disenfranchised people.

Susan Passovoy, member 1978 - 2015

March 20, 
Susan Passovoy was one of the first female attorneys in commercial real estate planning and land development. She attended Berkeley Law School at a time when less than 10% of the graduates were women. Throughout her career, Susan learned not to be afraid of change and embrace transition as a way to learn and make new contributions. She defines success as being true to one’s mission, vision and values. Susan remains involved with IWF through the Idaho chapter.

Rachel Mueller, member since 1978 

March 19, Rachel Mueller enjoyed several different careers during her professional life, and always found herself taking a leadership role. She was VP and COO of The Fields Investment Group, an event planner for the Special Olympics, founder of the Sundance Film Festival, and a successful retail business owner. Rachel is most proud of her ability to effect change and take organizations to the next level regardless of the industry. 

Fran Streets, member since 1986

March 18, Fran Streets broke ground as an African-American woman in financial services. Her career highlights include heading the private bank for the Bank of California in San Francisco, being the first African-American woman to be elected to the Board of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce and being a founding director of New Resource Bank. Fran has provided significant leadership for IWF both locally, as President of IWF NorCal, and globally, as President of IWF and the IWF Leadership Foundation. 

Eva Auchincloss, member since 1978

March 17, Eva Auchincloss was the first Executive Director of the Women’s Sport Foundation working tirelessly to pave the way for significant culture and attitude changes regarding women’s participation in sports. In 1979, She formed a nationwide coalition to ensure that Title IX legislation would be implemented and cover Intercollegiate Athletics. Eva played an important role in expanding athletic opportunities for women and girls and continues to inspire women of all ages to stay active.

Mary Huss, member since 1997

March 16, 
Mary Huss, the President and Publisher of the San Francisco Business Times and Silicon Valley Business Journal is a creative visionary and entrepreneur. She applied her business startup experience to turnaround and propel the SFBT to the top ranking in the field of business newspapers. The paper’s "Most Influential Women in Business" and the "Top Women-Owned Businesses" award programs are examples of how Mary has told the stories of hundreds of top-level women and is advancing women’s leadership.

Roslyn Braeman Payne, founding member since 1978

March 15, Roslyn Braeman Payne, one of the first women in the investment banking industry, spent most of her career in real estate and finance, including 20 years on the Board of The First American Corporation. After a nationwide search in 1986, Roslyn was selected as the first CEO of the Federal Asset Disposition Association where she developed policies in the best interest of taxpayers; many of these policies were implemented during the 2008 banking crisis.

Herma Hill Kay, member 1978 - 2017

March 14, 
Herma Hill Kay was the second woman to join the Berkeley Law faculty and became the school’s first female dean in 1992. For 57 years, she positively influenced students and the legal system. Herma received numerous honors and awards and was the first woman recipient of the Association of Law Schools’ Triennial Award for Lifetime Service to Legal Education and the Law in 2015. We are so grateful for Herma’s valuable leadership and lifetime contributions. 

Carol Hehmeyer, founding member

March 13, 
Carol Hehmeyer had the best trial record in the DA’s office in the 70’s, even more impressive given the blatant efforts to discredit her work and discrimination she faced as a woman trial lawyer. Carol also worked with the Queen’s Bench to benefit women such as getting women judges appointed, and started the Rape Foundation, which helped change the legal profession’s approach to rape cases and better protect women.

Katherine August-deWilde, member since 1978

March 12, 
Katherine August-deWilde’s 30 plus years of business experience culminated in top executive roles at First Republic, including President, Chief Operating Officer, and Vice Chair and Director. Honored with the award for "Excellence in Leadership" from Stanford Graduate School of Business, Katherine believes that her persistence and passion for results helped make her life and career a successful and interesting journey. 

Belva Davis, member since 1978

March 11, Belva Davis stands out as the first African American woman TV reporter on the west coast. In a career spanning half a century, Belva reported on many of the most explosive stories of the era, from the Black Panthers in the late 60s to the 1998 US Embassy bombing in Tanzania. Belva published her memoir “Never in My Wildest Dreams, A Black Woman’s Life in Journalism” in 2011, and her extraordinary life and achievements continue to inspire us all.

Nannette Griswold, member since 1986

March 10, Nannette Griswold was part of a group of managers and employees who started their own company in one of the Bay Area’s first management leveraged buyouts in 1983. She became the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, member of the Board, Part-Owner of Western American Forest Products, and the highest ranking woman in the company. Deriving satisfaction from being a role model and mentor, Nannette credits her determination, focus, attention to detail and integrity for her success. 

Maryles Casto, member since 1986

March 9, Maryles Casto started her career in travel as a stewardess for Philippine Airlines in the 60s before becoming a travel agent and eventually partnering with a friend to start her own travel agency, Casto Travel. 45+ years later, Maryles had the vision and determination to transform her business into an international agency that provides corporate, concierge, vacation and group travel management services. 

Nina Gruen, member 1989 - 2017  

March 7, Nina Gruen was a social scientist, a nationally respected professional, an author, the mother of five sons and much more. She was the co-founder of her family-owned consulting business, Gruen Gruen + Associates, and made a lasting impact improving many cities and properties. We are grateful to Nina for her many trailblazing activities, mentoring, and 28-year involvement in IWF; she is deeply missed. 

Eleanor Zuckerman, founding member

March 6, Eleanor Zuckerman is a founding member of IWF NorCal. Ellie positively changed many lives through her psychotherapy practice, and early years teaching English. She became a Licensed Psychologist in her 40s, inspired by other forum members to make the career transition. Ellie, who is always willing to learn and try new things, is most proud of her work that supported and advanced women and raising two successful daughters. 

Linda Hawes Clever, M.D., member since 1978

March 5, Linda Hawes Clever was the Founding Chair of the Department of Occupational Health at Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center (today CPMC) in the 1970s. In 1988, she founded RENEW, a non-profit focused on helping people take care of themselves despite the demands of their life. Published in 2010, Linda’s book, “The Fatigue Prescription” reaches out to people that need to renew their focus and regain balance in their daily lives.

Cecilia Herbert, member since 1987

March 4, Cecilia Herbert holds the distinction of being the first woman to run a JP Morgan office outside New York, the first professional woman featured on Fortune’s cover in 1978, and one of the first women to go through the Harvard MBA program. Cecilia is a leader who made sure she jumped on to all opportunities and paved the way for other women in the financial field. 

Karen Zehring, member since 1978 

March 3, Karen Zehring is a disruptive innovator who used her vision and persistence to help change the content delivery for business publications. Karen began her publishing career at Institutional Investor and then went to Business Week as Group Director of Planning and Development, becoming the only woman in the senior ranks before eventually starting four publishing and information companies, including flagship publication, Corporate Finance Magazine, between 1978 and 1995. 

Linda Moriarty, member since 1986 

March 2, Linda Moriarty broke barriers by being the first female architect hired by Gensler in 1972. As Principal, Linda hired and mentored staff and founded the Gensler Seattle office. She defines success as more than achievements but the value she has added to the people and causes she has interacted with and pursued. Linda’s mantra is “five I’s + 1”: Integrity, Initiative, Intellectual Curiosity, Innovation, Influence, and a dose of HUMOR. 

Carol Mayer Marshall, member since 1989 

March 1, Carol Mayer Marshall accomplished many firsts for women in her extensive public service career, including the first woman to: serve as a Congressional Relations Director for Office of Economic Opportunity in 1971; head Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA); and direct the SF Mint. Carol founded Wire for Woman in 2017 to encourage other women to pursue public office and address the gender inequalities inherent in politics.

February 25, members welcomed special guest Liz Ann Sonders, Senior Vice President and Chief Investment Strategist of Charles Schwab for an economic forecast discussion. Through an interview with IWF NorCal member Heather Pelant, Partner at Baker Street Advisors, Liz Ann shared her perspectives about current economic events and the impact of the pandemic. February 19 - Fran Streets, Member since 1986, past president (1990 - 1991) 

As part of Black History Month, we honor IWF NorCal member Fran A. Streets, who has dedicated her life to education, women’s leadership, the arts and the city of San Francisco, with a particular commitment to improving the lives of women and girls globally. Fran had a 40-year career in banking, beginning with the Bank of California where she achieved many firsts, and culminating as Vice President, City Director of the Private Banking Division at Wells Fargo. Fran’s pioneering career in banking was matched by her leadership in numerous civic and non-profit causes. Fran was the first African American elected as President of IWF, and she was also President of its Leadership Foundation.

February 17 - London Need, Mayor of San Francisco

As part of Black History Month, we celebrate Mayor London Breed, the 45th Mayor of San Francisco and the first African American woman Mayor in the City's history. She is a native San Franciscan, raised by her grandmother in Plaza East Public Housing in the Western Addition neighborhood. London has dedicated her entire adult life to serving our communities and improving the City's housing, environment, public safety, transportation, and quality of life.  

February 11 – Belva Davis, Member since 1978

As part of Black History Month, we honor IWF NorCal member Belva Davis. As the first black female TV journalist in the West, Belva helped change the face and focus of TV news. In a career spanning half a century, Belva reported many of the most explosive stories of the era, soldiered in the trenches in the battle for racial equality, and brought stories of black Americans out of the shadows and into the light of day. Belva was born to a 15-year-old Louisiana laundress during the Great Depression and raised in the crowded projects of Oakland. She has won eight Emmys and a number of Lifetime Achievement awards. Learn more about Belva in her memoir, “Never in My Wildest Dreams: A Black Woman’s Life in Journalism,” published in 2011 and IWF Northern California Legacy Foundation’s Oral Histories, “Women Who Have Made a Difference.” Members may also view IWF NorCal member Jenny Erwin's Early Leader Series interview with Belva here.

February 5 – Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States

For our celebration launch this week, a shout out to Vice President Kamala Harris, who is inspiring so many as she breaks barriers and leads the nation. She was born in Oakland, California to parents who emigrated from India and Jamaica, and has a distinguished career in public service, having been elected District Attorney of San Francisco, California Attorney General, and United States Senator before becoming Vice President. 

Webinar: US Supreme Court Cases (Session 2)

February 4, IWF NorCal member and attorney Barbara B. Creed held her second discussion of upcoming US Supreme Court cases. Members learned of, discussed and voted on the outcomes of three cases on the court's docket. Webinar: Saving Children from Sex Trafficking  

February 3, IWF NorCal member Cailean Sherman introduced founder of Special Operations Katie Beers and San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe who shared information of the important work they are doing to rescue children who are being trafficked in the San Francisco Bay Area. Through stories of actual cases Special Operations has been involved in, we learned how this organization is making a difference in the lives of children and families in our communities. Signature Event: 2021 Annual Meeting

January 26, IWF NorCal members gathered virtually for the 2021 Annual Meeting, where we met seven new members, enjoyed two breakout sessions and heard from IWF leadership, including IWF Global's President Helen Rule, Vice President Carolyn Carter, IWF NorCal President Barbara Adachi and IWF Northern California Legacy Foundation President Jodi Morris. Webinar: US Supreme Court Cases (Session 1)  

January 18, 2021, IWF NorCal member and attorney Barbara B. Creed launched our 2021 programs with a virtual discussion of three US Supreme Court cases on the upcoming docket. Barbara's annual discussion is one of our most popular events and this session was once again, interesting and interactive! Barbara will be repeating this discussion on February 4, for anyone who missed it. Members may also watch the recording here


Signature Event: 2020 Annual Holiday Party 

December 17, Over 100 members came together to celebrate the holidays through fun virtual experiences made possible by IWF NorCal member and First Republic President and Board Member Hafize Gaye Erkan. After a group toast, members participated in Broadway Roulette, Sip & Paint and a Speakeasy/Mixology class. This was our final event for 2020 and we wish everyone happy holidays!

December 15, The Peninsula Book Club's annual holiday book exchange was conducted virtually this year! Members will receive their gift books via Book Passage. Happy holidays!

Annual Book Review with Book Passage

December 7, IWF NorCal member and Book Passage owner Elaine Petrocelli and Luisa Smith, Book Passage's Buying Director hosted the annual holiday book review virtually for members. Elaine and Luisa shared their insights on books worth reading and gifting as we head into the holidays. From the best novels to engrossing non-fiction, entertaining children's books and beautiful keepsake gift books, there is something for everyone! Members may download the book list and watch the recording here.

Fireside Chat: Navigating Through Uncertainty 
December 3, IWF NorCal members Wendy Beecham, Roberta ("Bobbie") La Porte, and Kate Renwick-Espinosa shared personal stories and relevant experiences on how they have helped leaders, their own teams, and organizations manage through change and uncertainty...a very timely topic. With the helpful context, tools, and confidence-building know-how they provided, we can crush uncertainty and get ready for anything! Members may watch the recording here.

Webinar: New Year Forecasts: Fashion & Retail   

December 2, IWF NorCal members Jeanne Allen and Maureen Conners and special guest Rachel Fischbein led an engaging and informative discussion on recent developments in the fashion and retail sectors and what we can expect for the future of the fashion industry. We also heard the inspiring story of Fashion Incubator San Francisco Designer-in-Residence Chrissie Lam, who founded Love Is Project and is a social-impact entrepreneur. Mini Thanksgiving Toast

November 26, on Thanksgiving Day, members came together virtually for a 10-minute "mini-gathering" to commemorate this special holiday with a beautiful reading by IWF NorCal member Ellen Snee, followed by a Thanksgiving toast.

A Virtual Conversation with Community Leader Felicia Gaston

November 12, IWF NorCal members had a wonderful and inspiring evening with Felecia Gaston, the non-profit executive director of the Performing Stars program for children and Phoenix Project for young adults in Marin County. Through an interview with member and award winning journalist Cheryl Jennings, we learned about Felecia's passion and commitment to the community, to our youth and to so many in need. November 5, IWF NorCal members Christi Haley-Stover and Suzie Woordward Morris led an uplifting and inspirational webinar on POSITIVITY by sharing personal stories, experiences and science. Screening of "Rising Power"

November 2, IWF members watched Global Fund for Women's film "Rising Power" which is part of the Fundamental Film Series that features grassroots movements and community leaders who are standing up for our fundamental human rights. The screening was followed by a Q&A with

Virtual Discussion with ABC Reporter Kaylee Hartung, COVID-19 Survivor & Plasma Donor

August 4, ABC Network News Reporter Kaylee Hartung shared her personal story of contracting COVID-19 while reporting on the coronavirus pandemic, donating her plasma after recovering, and saving a life. Kaylee was joined by talented television producers Ashely Riegle, Jenna Robinson and Derick Yanehiro. Virtual Event: Meet Our Legacy 2020 Grantees

June 23, Members met representatives from our two 2020 Legacy Foundation partner grantees: GirlVentures and Year Up. It was wonderful to hear from their leaders about the important work they are doing in our communities and how they have been managing during this difficult time. We learned how Legacy's grants have helped and heard directly from their inspiring program participants Emma Price (GirlVentures) and Mantasha Lakdawala (Year Up). New Connections Virtual Toast

June 19, Our annual signature event: New Connections could not be held in person over a traditional lunch, but that did not deter us from getting together and having a lovely virtual celebration of our new members and friendships. Over 60 members participated in our virtual event where we welcomed eight new members, held smaller group discussions (like being at a dining table), and toasted everyone with our own beverages and yummy treats from San Francisco-based Pretty Please Bakeshop

Summer Camp Virtual Happy Hour

June 5, IWF NorCal's Summer Camp is an annual highlight for members. While we were not able to go away for the weekend this year, we enjoyed a virtual happy hour with drinks, goodie bags and a fun ice breaker sharing stories and photos of what we have been doing while sheltering-in-place as well as fun memes and videos! Virtual Book Passage Book Review: Special Summer Edition

June 4, IWF NorCal member and Book Passage owner Elaine Petrocelli and Book Passage's Buying Director Luisa Smith held a special summer edition virtual book review. June 2, IWF NorCal members Cherie Sorokin and Kris Veaco, experienced experts in corporate governance, conducted a valuable webinar on “Board and Director Effectiveness – Practical Realities.” They discussed board practices and how to implement them in various situations, including the current COVID-19 situation. May 27, Dr. Rebecca Shaw, Chief Scientist of the World Wildlife Fund held an exclusive webinar for IWF NorCal members titled "Beyond Boundaries: Emerging Zoonotic Diseases, Nature, and Human Well-Being." Rebecca has been researching and leading interdisciplinary approaches to conservation and climate change for more than 30 years. She led a thought-provoking and informative discussion. Based on her personal experiences with 5 evacuations – 3 times for fire, 1 road closure and 1 bridge collapse, including being air lifted to safety by a Chinook helicopter, Rachel had tons of advice and tips on how to stock up, prepare, and stay calm. IWF Connections: Breakfast with Roasabeth Moss Kanter

March 4, A small gathering of IWF NorCal members took place at the Westin SFO to have an intimate conversation with Rosabeth Moss Kanter. It was fantastic to hear about her new book “Think Outside the Building” and her optimism for the future. She also wanted to hear about each of us and IWF NorCal. As a member of IWF Massachusetts, Rosabeth is passionate about our organization and is excited that IWF has achieved critical mass and is well-positioned for the future.For those of you who couldn't attend as we were limited to a small group, Rosabeth also spoke at The Commonwealth Club this week and if you have an opportunity, here is the link to her podcast which is definitely worth listening to!

January 8, An incredible evening hearing from four women leaders of Bay Area theaters! IWF NorCal Members Susie Medak of Berkeley Repertory Theatre and Jennifer Bielstein of A.C.T. spoke with their artistic partners about gender disparities in the theater, about the challenges of running non-profit theaters, and what the future holds for art and culture in a technology obsessed world.



Behind the Scenes: Glassybaby

December 10, Members enjoyed a “Behind the Scenes” event at the Glassybaby hot shop in Berkeley. IWF Washington member and Glassybaby CFO Sherilyn Anderson joined by video conference to provide Glassybaby’s story and then members tried their hand at glass blowing. A delightful evening!

December 9, IWF NorCal member Elaine Petrocelli hosted members at her independent book shop Book Passage on December 9 at the annual Holiday Book Review. Elaine's 2019 book recommendations have filled our reading lists and provided great holiday gift ideas!

July 20, FARM+FISH+FLOWERS offered a rare opportunity to tour Half Moon Bay’s bounty. Our tour guides led us to the Coastside Farmers Markets, The James Johnston House, and Bay City Flower Company. Picnic lunch at the beach was the perfect respite. And the sun shone all day.

IWF Tennessee member and author Susan Packard met with IWF NorCal members before her event at Book Passage on June 12. Her book Fully Human is about developing a willingness to work on emotional fitness, building trust and embracing "We" instead of "me."

Summer Camp 2019!

June 7–9, members gathered at The Bishop's Ranch in Healdsburg for a fun and relaxing Summer Camp weekend. Save the date for next year's summer camp which will be June 5-7, 2020.

UN Women's Global Voices Film Festival

On May 16, members enjoyed 10 virtual reality experiences at GoPro, meeting female filmmakers pioneering this emerging technology to treat mental illness, bias, and racism; to highlight women's rights work globally; and to create unique games. On May 18, big screen sessions at Lucasfilm showcased 10 powerful stories of resilience and the fight for justice from Myanmar and Iraq to Liberia and Ireland. The film fest’s mission is to showcase independent films made by women from all over the world, and to raise funds for UN Women’s global life-changing programs. Women on Boards Series

In April and May, IWF NorCal hosted three events to educate, develop and support members interested in board preparedness. Presentation slides and webinar videos from these events are available to members here. The fourth part of this series was held in June when members updated their headshots with a professional photographer.

IWF Connections!

Nancy Pedot, former IWF NorCal member, current member of IWF France and IWF New York, hosted a wonderful evening on May 15 where she shared her engaging story with members of how her couture fashions and salon came to be.

Behind the Scenes at VSP! 

On May 2, IWF NorCal member Kate Renwick-Espinosa hosted a behind the scenes tour at the VSPOne Optical Laboratory in Sacramento. A fascinating tour, followed by a delicious lunch!

Spring Dine Arounds!

Leading Edge Insights in Corporate Innovation 

On April 18, a panel discussion with IWF NorCal members Beth Devin and Yvette Hollingsworth Clark, and Mark Jamison of Visa, was moderated by IWF NorCal member Valerie Corradini. A very relevant, interesting and insightful event.

IWF Cornerstone Conference Videos
At this year’s Cornerstone Conference, IWF hosted more than 50 expert speakers and moderators to address topics including innovation in architecture, barriers for women in sports, sustainable fashion, the future of the European Union and girls’ access to education. Some of the sessions were filmed and available for members to view at their leisure. Interforum Dinner

IWF NorCal hosted an inter-forum dinner for 35 members and guests from nine IWF forums in Barcelona on the eve of the opening night ceremony of the IWF Cornerstone Conference on April 10. A wonderful evening of reunions and new friendships! 

Peninsula Supper Club

On April 4, the Peninsula Supper Club held its inaugural Jeffersonian Dinner with the conversation focused on 

the challenges and opportunities posed by a rapidly and continually changing future of work! Co-hosted by IWF NorCal members Denise Brosseau and Chris Shipley.

Record Participation at Peninsula Book Club

On March 19, a record number of members --29-- attended the Peninsula Book Club discussion held at IWF NorCal member Barbara Adachi's home. IWF NorCal member Valerie Red-Horse Mohl facilitated a great discussion of "Winner Takes All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World" by Anand Giridharadas.


The East Bay Supper Club 

On March 11, Dr. Jennifer Schneider of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation joined the East Bay Supper Club to share about advances in research in an effort to cure, prevent and treat type 1 diabetes. 

A Celebratory Evening 

On February 27, in honor of Black History Month, IWF NorCal members attended a special event at Mills College celebrating the life of acclaimed saxophonist Dexter Gordon. IWF NorCal member Beth Hillman hosted a VIP reception and played the tenor saxophone and IWF NorCal member Belva Davis facilitated a discussion with Maxine Gordon, historian and wife of Dexter Gordon. 

Supreme Court Docket Discussion in Carmel

On February 19, IWF NorCal member Barbara Creed discussed upcoming supreme court cases in Carmel at the home of IWF NorCal member Mary Gray-Reeves. There were 

21 guests in attendance, including members of the Wellesley Alumnae group and other prominent guests from the Monterey Peninsula.

East Bay Supper Club Potluck

IWF NorCal member Beth Hillman hosted a potluck in her home at Mills College on February 12 for the East Bay Supper Club. A warm and wonderful evening celebrating friendships!

East Bay Supper Club with Special Guest Barbara Creed 

On January 28, the East Bay Supper Club welcomed special guest and IWF NorCal member Barbara Creed to discuss upcoming supreme court cases. Barbara is also offering her supreme court discussion on February 19 in Carmel. 

2019 Annual Meeting
The 2019 Annual Meeting was held on January 15 at the City Club. We kicked off our 40th anniversary celebrations and welcomed Stephanie O'Keefe, CEO, IWF Global. In addition, Denise Dunning, IWF NorCal member and Founder of Rise Up - the Legacy Foundation's 2019 partner - presented on opportunities for member engagement. See presentation slides


Book Clubs Discuss Amy Logan's Novel

The Seven Perfumes of Sacrifice, written by IWF NorCal member Amy Logan was the topic of the Peninsula Book Club in September and the Marin & North Bay Book Club in October.

IWF Global Leadership Foundation's Fellows Program
Watch the video recording from the 25thAnniversary Celebration of the Leadership Foundation’s Fellows Program. The event, which was attended by more than 140 members and Fellow Alumnae, featured a roundtable discussion, A Quarter Century of Change: Reflections on Women in Leadership Since the Glass Ceiling Commission, and a reception in honor of the Founders of the Leadership Foundation hosted at the home of IWF Washington, DC member Kitty Kelley. New Connections Luncheon
On Saturday, June 23, 74 members met at the Olympic Club for the annual IWF NorCal New Connections Luncheon. Nine new members were introduced at this signature event! Members were also joined by four guests from the Legacy Foundation's partner organizations Year Up and Girl Scouts, who shared their inspirational stories. See photos.
